Exclusive Interview: Edgardo Rivera, 10th Survivor Voted Off

Apart from the painstaking challenges, assortment of players and outdoor scenery, one thing that got the viewers hooked with Survivor: Fiji was the connivances and backstabbing issues that surrounded the participants. This was especially the case for Edgardo Rivera, the 10th Survivor eliminated on the competitive reality program. In an interview with BuddyTV, he shared his sentiments on his Survivor experience.

Rivera, a 28-year old native of San Juan, Puerto Rico, got his education at the Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. While studying, he became engrossed with tennis and became a member of the Davis Cup National Team. At present, he works as a regional account and planning supervisor.

Rivera’s inclusion on Survivor: Fiji was not really intentional, although he was a fan that considered the show as the most genuine reality program, compared to other shows that were partially scripted. His friend was actually the one that applied but was unfortunately rejected. Upon his friend’s recommendation and submitted application of Rivera, Rivera got a call and went through a meticulous casting process.

As far as his elimination is concerned, he really felt disappointed with the outcome, getting forced in a manipulated situation, influenced by Dreamz and prompted by Mookie’s revelation of the immunity idol. But if things went according to plan, they would have picked Alex to get voted off, consequently eliminating Cassandra because of Alex’s immunity.

In the end, Rivera was glad that he had hindsight of nearly everything that went on during his inclusion, which was contrary to what Survivor had projected. He was actually nervous about seeing himself on screen since he did not know what to expect. At any rate, he deemed his Survivor experience as something very memorable.

To catch more alliances formed, not to mention more backstabbing action, watch Survivor: Fiji every Thursdays 8 PM ET/PT on CBS.

Women And Poker 1

Part I: A Brief History of Women in Poker

The precise history of poker is one that is riddled with myths and legends. The truth is that no one historian of the game knows for certain how poker came to be the world famous phenomenon we now see every day on our TV screens. Some have speculated that because it closely resembles the Persian game of as nas, Persian sailors may have passed this game on to settlers in New Orleans while restocking supplies at the local harbor and it eventually took hold as the modern game known as poker.

Others believe that it may be an offshoot of the Irish card game Poca or even the French game poque, which is thought to be descendant of the German pochen (which essentially means to brag as a bluff.) The true origin of the game may never be known and in fact the more likely story is that somebody created poker after learning various similar games from different backgrounds.

Whether poker is a Chinese, Persian, Egyptian, French, German or Irish creation is of no consequence. What is certain is that some point in history the Persian Ganijifa (Treasure Cards) were changed from a solely Persian game into a new hybrid called poker.

French colonials are thought to have imported their beloved poque to the New World when they first arrived in Canada. The game was then brought to New Orleans in the beginning of the 18th century by a group of French Canadian settlers.

In 1834, Jonathan H. Green made one of the earliest known written references to poker when he mentioned rules to the “cheating game,” that had been gaining popularity on various Mississippi riverboats. Before people knew how it even happened, poker became the fashionable game for river-boaters all over the Mississippi. What started out as Louisiana phenomenon quickly turned into one of the most popular games in America.

At the turn of the century poker was still an illegal game in most parts of the United States. Its popularity was too wide-spread to keep its fans from playing and the game soon spread to the Old West where legends such as Wyatt Earp and Wild Bill Hickock earned reputations as sharp card players as well as pistol slingers.

While poker became a popular mainstay among men, women soon caught on and began playing as well. The first of these women to gain a serious reputation is none other than Poker Alice, the first known professional female poker player. Born in Devonshire, England she soon moved with her family to Colorado where she married a mining engineer, Frank Duffield. After the death of her first husband Alice needed a new way to support herself. Duffield had shown her a few hands of poker and she had taken a liking to the game. After his death she began to pursue gambling as a career becoming a card dealer.

During her career as a poker player, Alice gained a serious reputation. On good nights she would earn as much as $6,000 and would gloat amongst her peers daring any newcomers to try their luck against her. Never one to be caught off guard, she was known to carry a .38 revolver with her and never hesitated to use it. By the time of her death in 1930 she had already firmly established herself as one of the most legendary poker players of all time and paved the way for future generations of professional female poker players.

During the 1920’s, there were only five games that were legal in Las Vegas and three of those were variants of poker. The legalization of gambling began in 1931 and the first legal casino license was issued to a woman, Mayme Stocker. Her husband and boys were working for the railroad and anybody caught in the gambling world who worked for the railroads would be immediately fired from their job. That is why Mayme put the license in her name instead of her husband’s. It was a good gamble for the Stockers as they quickly became one of the leaders of the casino community in Las Vegas.

Although legal in Las Vegas, card playing remained illegal throughout the rest of the United States. It was during these post-Prohibition years that poker gained its reputation as secretive game played in back alleys and garages. Doyle Brunson, one of the original Rounders (road gamblers), often talks about how taboo the game was, "I remember one time back in the fifties," he shook his head as he reminisced, "I saw an old college buddy walking down the street, coming toward me. He crossed the street so he wouldn't have to talk to me."

Gradually poker gained popularity to the point where, nowadays, almost everybody has at least played poker for sunflower seeds or M&M’s. Starting in the late 1990’s a new game started to emerge on the poker scene, that game was Texas Hold’em. Ever since the creation of Texas Hold’em, poker has become one of the most popular games in the world. Nowadays one can see more poker on ESPN than baseball and kids start playing for money as early as Junior High.

Along with the explosion of the contemporary poker scene we have seen the emergence of women as dominating figures in the game. Who are these women and just how successful are they? These questions and more will be answered in Part II!

Make The Most Of British Spread Betting

We Brits love to bet. We always have and most likely always will. We bet on sports. We bet on games. We even bet on television and on superstars. We can't seem to help ourselves - perhaps it is in our blood. Whatever the reason we can't get enough, it is evident that we are in our glory now that we can take our passion online and bet even easier than ever before. One clear indication of this is that the majority of the last World Cup bets were placed online and that overall betting on that event was up 60% from the previous World Cup.

While there are in fact other nations that do appreciate betting to some degree, it seems that we are well ahead in a lot of those statistics. One such example is spread betting. Spread betting is not even allowed by law in many places including the United States. In Britain, one estimate is that up to 400,000 of us currently have spread betting accounts.

Basic Spread Betting

Spread betting involves complicated sporting indexes that are made up from the odds of certain things happening. For example, the index may say that in a particular game, there will be between 10 and 15 points awarded in a certain type of play or certain type of goal. That means that the 'spread' is 10-15. A better who bets (or 'buys') in at 1 pound will then either win or lose money based on if the actual number of those type of goals ended up under the spread or over the spread amount. If the actual number was less than 10, the better must pay out money lost. If the actual number is higher than the spread, the better wins.

Spread Betting and Finance

Outside Britain, spread betting is more of a financial term. Especially in the U.S., it is seen as a money game for investors who play the markets. Spread betting in this case is done when companies provide the chance to gamble on the future prices of commodities or on company stock.

Spread betting is generally seen as a high risk financial game and it does not have a place in sport and entertainment gambling in most places outside Britain. As we know however, the internet has erased borders in many ways and online spread betting in the UK is being enjoyed by people from all over the world.

Cautious Enjoyment

While we aren't afraid of spread betting and what it has to offer here in Britain, it isn't for everyone. Experts caution us against getting into this type of betting if we are not familiar with how the numbers work and the fact that we can lose more than our bet in one fell swoop. Once you learn the ropes and decide you can afford it, it might just be the game for you too.

Never considered faint of heart, Britons are actually embracing spread betting in ever increasing numbers. It can be an exhilarating change to regular betting and many like the additional risk involved in this kind of play.

Everything You Need To Know About Subwoofers

Subwoofer refers to either a woofer, or a complete loudspeaker dedicated to the reproduction of bass audio frequencies, typically from 150 Hz down to 20 Hz.

Subwoofers are useful for augmenting main loudspeakers by providing playback of low bass frequencies at high levels. Subwoofers are available in several formats, including bass reflex, acoustic suspension, infinite baffle, horn loaded, tapped horn and bandpass types. The range of sounds from lowest to highest that the subwoofer is capable of reproducing is called frequency range. The actual frequency range can vary depending upon the type of box, crossover point, and the vehicle the subwoofer is installed in.

All loudspeakers characteristically exhibit trade offs between frequency response and response time or transient response depending on the characteristics of the voice coil, properties of the magnetic motor, the cone mass, and the nature of the enclosure.

The voice coil consists of a bobbin with wire wound around it. The voice coil is attached to the bottom of the cone and extends into the air gap surrounding the pole piece. The voice coil translates the magnet's energy into cone motion. Cone size and voice coil inductance are major factors for a subwoofer.

Subwoofers use drivers woofers typically between 8" and 18" in diameter, but some have been as large as 60". Some drivers as small as 4" may be referred to as subwoofers but drivers less than 8" generally have neither the cone area nor excursion ability necessary to produce deep bass, especially in practical sized enclosures. The most common subwoofer sizes in professional concert audio are 12", 15" and 18".

A brief history

The first subwoofer was developed during the 1960s by Ken Kreisel. Kreisel's solution was to design a powered loudspeaker that would reproduce only those frequencies that were too low for the electrostatic speakers to convey and thereby fill in the missing sonic information. Infinity's full range electrostatic speaker system of about the same time also used a subwoofer to cover the lower frequency range the electrostatic arrays did not handle adequately. Subwoofers came into greater popular attention in 1974.

Applications of subwoofers

Subwoofers are used in various systems. The main areas of application include professional audio, home audio, car audio and many other fields. Subwoofers are now almost universal in professional sound applications such as live concert sound, churches, nightclubs, and theme parks. Professional audio subwoofers must be capable of very high output levels. This is reflected in the design attention given in recent years to the subwoofer applications for sound reinforcement, public address, and concert systems.

A subwoofer does not necessarily provide superior bass performance in comparison to large conventional loudspeakers on ordinary music recordings due to the lack of very low frequency content on such sources. Most home and car systems have much smaller and unmatched drivers at low frequencies; they attempt to reproduce very low frequencies with large cone motions.
